Recent, Acer has revealed one of the unusual devices called Acer Smart Display which has become one of the curious concepts. On the one hand, we have an interesting monitor 21.5 inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) with integrated speakers. On the other, a complete All In One based on Android that giant tablet mode shows interesting connectivity options: three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, micro USB connection and SD card slot.
• Manufacturer: Acer
• Model: Acer Smart Display
• Panel 21.5 inch WLED, FullHD
• Android 4.0
• Three USB 2.0, WebCam 1.2 MP, micro USB, SD, HDMI.
• 8 GB internal storage
• 1 GB of RAM
• Recommended price: 325 euros
To run the Android ecosystem, Smart Display houses a dual-core processor ARM Cortex A9 1.0GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 32 GB with card. It also has a 1.2 MP webcam and a microphone to complete a “Skype experience.” The set is sold for 325 euros, a price quite attractive for both tablet segments or as monitors.
Large format Android
Browsing the Internet, movies and video files, perform simple editing of documents, watch TV or play certain games. These are some of the applications that match and can be drawn from this Acer 21-inch Smart Display. A huge tablet ruled by Android 4.0 which can function as an All In One low cost.
However, the experience of having a 21-inch tablet is interesting. View and interact with content from apps like Youtube, Google Earth or CNN on a large screen is more attractive than it might seem a priori. Running Android games in Acer Smart Display becomes a curious experience, which depending on the title works fairly well. In some classics like Angry Birds, the user experience is great. In contrast, those games that make use of accelerometers are rather unusable, unless you do not count on a gamepad that supports that game.
Of course applications that make use of the stylus, such as Autodesk SketchBook that make the whole screen into a huge canvas, it is good for creative users and even the classic photo editing applications provide a qualitative leap when they can “express” on larger screens. What is the catch? That hardware inside is not very strong and it shows. Applications such as Google Chrome, which should not give too much trouble, but it is slow and heavy and when working with multiple applications at the same time, we started to miss having a “real computer”.
We believe that with a more powerful processor, more RAM and more internal storage (the 8 GB given for very little, even that can be expanded), this would be a device really recommended for a wide range of users.
A unique monitor
In its configuration as a monitor, the Acer Smart Display is not exactly a display to use. This is apparent even from the aesthetic point of view, it is the best option from the ergonomic. Furthermore, the plastic frame is raised approximately one centimeter on the screen, creating a “box effect” of odd. Contrary to its position as a working monitor, also there are absence of controls for brightness / contrast / color adjustment, losing touch interface when acts as an external monitor (although both Windows 7 and Windows 8 itself especially with these drivers) since neither is able to mount the USB ports when used in this mode.
Although it is true that the Acer Smart Display can function as an external monitor to be connected to any of our device, their functionality in this area is rather limited.
Acer Smart Display is an original concept that can have much meaning for a segment of users: those who want to have a device on which they can access content on a screen of reasonable size by spending little money.
Although the Taiwanese firm presents this device as an All In One, it’s actually one giant tablet, with no room for more complex applications. It does not replace a desktop computer, but if you are picky, you can play in 60% of the scenarios.
This was all about the Acer Smart Display, stay tuned for reviews of other cool devices, happy toipoing.
